Sitting Down with Six Directors: Insights, Regrets, and What’s Next for Pharma & MedTech

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with six incredible directors from the Pharma and MedTech industries and let me tell you, they didn’t hold back. From the best advice they’ve ever received to their biggest regrets, and what they predict businesses will be looking for in the next 12 months, these conversations were full of raw insights and real-world wisdom.

Here’s what they had to say.

The Best Advice They’ve Been Given

You know that one piece of advice that stays with you? The advice that gets under your skin and shapes how you approach your career? Well, I asked each director for the best advice they’ve ever received and unsurprisingly, it wasn’t all about technical expertise.

“Stay curious,” said one director with a smile. “It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking you know it all, especially as you rise through the ranks. But it’s that curiosity that keeps you learning, evolving, and adapting to new challenges.”

Another director shared: “Never underestimate the power of listening. Sometimes, the best ideas come from the people who are not in the spotlight but are working day in and day out. Pay attention to them.”

What They Look for When Interviewing Candidates

We all know that job interviews can feel like a game of “guess what they’re thinking.” So, I asked these directors: What do you actually look for when interviewing candidates?

“First and foremost, I look for authenticity,” said one director with a grin. “You can teach someone skills, but you can’t teach someone to be genuine. If they’re comfortable being themselves, I know we can work together.”

Another director added, “I’m looking for a balance – technical skills, of course, but also that emotional intelligence. Can they read the room? Can they collaborate and adapt in a fast-paced environment? It’s all about adaptability.”

“I want someone who’s not just going to tick boxes. I want someone who asks questions. Someone who shows interest beyond the job description, who shows they’ve done their homework and are hungry to learn more.”

It was clear that while technical know-how is crucial, being authentic, adaptable, and curious stands out as the winning combination.

Their Biggest Regret

Let’s be real. Not everything is smooth sailing. I asked the directors about their biggest regrets in their careers. The answers were humbling.

“Not taking more risks early on,” one director said. “I played it safe for a while, stayed within my comfort zone. Looking back, I wish I had trusted my gut more often and taken more risks earlier in my career.”

Another director shared a reflection: “I regret not asking for help sooner. There’s this pressure to have all the answers, but asking for help or guidance is a strength, not a weakness. I’ve learned that the hard way.”

Their regrets weren’t about missed opportunities or career moves, they were about learning to trust themselves more and knowing that it’s okay to seek help when needed. A good reminder for all of us, right?

What They Predict for the Next 12 Months

Now, let’s talk future. With everything changing so quickly in our industries, what do these directors predict businesses will be looking for in the next 12 months?

“Digital transformation will be key,” one director said without hesitation. “We’ve already seen the shift, but the next year will be all about companies who are truly embracing new technology, not just for the sake of it, but to really integrate it into their strategies.”

Another director shared an interesting perspective: “In the next year, I think we’ll see a shift towards agility. With the uncertainty we’ve experienced globally, businesses are looking for employees who can pivot quickly and handle ambiguity. The ability to thrive in that kind of environment will be crucial.”

A third prediction came from a director who spoke about the importance of leadership: “I think businesses will be focused on building stronger, more resilient leadership teams. The ability to inspire and motivate teams will be a top priority. It’s all about leadership that empowers others to perform at their best.”

From digital transformation to agile leadership, it’s clear the next 12 months will require adaptability, a focus on innovation, and a strong foundation of leadership.

Closing Thoughts: A Bit of Cheeky Wisdom

Sitting down with these directors gave me so much to think about, and I hope it does the same for you. Whether you’re looking for advice on interviewing, wondering about regrets, or trying to get ahead of future trends, the overarching theme was clear: authenticity, adaptability, and a willingness to learn are non-negotiable.

The future doesn’t wait for anyone. It’s shaped by those who dare to learn, adapt, and lead with purpose.
